Hello! I’m Caroline, mummy of 2 beautiful girls, and lover of food, particularly all things sweet. I am striving to create healthier choices for my children, and hopefully for you too!

My sugar-free journey started during my second pregnancy when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. In hindsight, I probably had it with my first too, but it was never picked up.

For the health and wellbeing of my unborn baby, I had to sacrifice all my favourite things to eat, as well as test my blood sugar levels a few times a day, everyday. It wasn’t the most enjoyable experience, but it was a no-brainer.

Once my little one was born, I felt like it has been a wake-up call. I was addicted to sugar, and I was kidding myself that I had it under control. I had managed to go for 6 months without it, so why go back?

Having bought a couple of recipe and lifestyle books that were on the market at the time, I found I was disappointed by the addition of syrups and sweeteners that were in almost every sugar-free recipe I looked at. That’s not to say that there isn’t a place for such things, but I wanted something different. I didn’t want to bake something that had a scientific-sounding ingredient in it. I wanted good, natural, not-messed-about-with food. So, I started creating my own recipes based on the various others I found, but adjusting them to suit my needs.

The name “Innocent and Sweet” came to me in the middle of the night, after feeding my baby and struggling to get back to sleep. I guess I was excited about the prospect of having something to focus my brain, other than nappies, feeding and singing “The Wheels On The Bus”! It’s actually a lyric from an Alanis Morissette song:

“I hate the world today. You’re so good to me
I know, but I can’t change.
Tried to tell you but you look at me like maybe,
I’m an angel underneath, innocent and sweet”

There isn’t really any significance to the rest of the lyrics in the song, but there was something so perfect about it, that I knew I was onto something! The very next morning, at a more reasonable hour of the day, I designed the logo and the blog was born.

So, here I am exploring a sugar-free world and enjoying it very much! I hope that you can take something from this blog, whether it’s a recipe or some motivation to reduce your own sugar-intake. Happy baking!
